Dear Smalltalk Enthusiasts:
Enclosed is the first edition of the Public Smalltalk Code.
These files are a collection of hints, techniques, and code
made publicly available by the Smalltalk User Groups across
the world.
As can be expected in any first endeavor, the turn out was
not what we had all hoped for. Of the 14 user groups, four
Smalltalk consultants, and four magazines that I contacted,
only two user groups and one consultant responded with code.
Somewhat more dismal was the fact that although some magazines
promised support, it failed to materialize. I was also
disappointed that none of the non-contributing user groups
requested a copy of this compilation.
On the more positive side, many people contacted me and were
truly interested in participating and they were very positive
about Smalltalk. The code in this first collection covers a
variety of areas; hopefully this will spark new ideas for the
second edition that will get more of the groups involved.
The groups which have contributed in this edition are:
Directory Name Group and PD Code organizer
CAROLINA North Carolina - Kendall Green
CALIFORN California - Robert Cooper
DENVER Denver - Paul Regenhardt
SWEDEN Sweden - Hans Kylberg
ARTIFACT Smalltalk Consultants - Tom Wrensch & Gene Korienek
ZUNIQ Smalltalk Consultants - Jean Francoise Cloutier
Each of the directories contain all of the files as I recieved
them from the user group or consultant.
None of the submissions had any type of disclaimer, but please
keep in mind that this code is "as is", and you are using it
at your own risk.
So here it is, the first edition of Public Smalltalk Code.
Where do we go from here? The second edition naturally. Use
this code, give it to everyone who is interested, and extract
from them a promise that they will donate some of their code to
the public domain. Organize your user groups code onto one disk
and send it to me. I'll act as a clearing house and combine all
of the separate user group submissions onto one disk. From
there I'll send a copy of the second edition to every user group
that sends me a diskette, regardless of whether or not that
group submitted any PD code (Please include a self addressed
stamped mailer). One of the things I'd like every user group
(and Consultant) to do at a minimum, is to describe the projects
that they are working on, what types of code they are willing to
swap, and what types of code they are looking for. Currently
I'm hoping for a January 1991 release for the second edition.
